The story of the Fakhro Group business begins with its founder, Haji Yousif bin Abdulrahman Fakhro. Born in Bahrain to a merchant family in 1871, Haji Yousif started his business in 1888, importing food stuffs and building materials, mostly from India, and distributing them in the local market. He operated out of a shop in Muharraq, which was then the capital of Bahrain. The shop was soon expanded to an Amara (which is a combination of shop, office and warehouse), located on the sea front of Muharraq.

  • 1914

The advent of World War 1 in 1914 saw a rapid increase in demand for food and Haji Yousif engaged in re-exporting products to Arabian Gulf ports. By the late twenties, He was at the centre of a change in the business model of trading, as he and his sons signed agency agreements with important international manufacturers of motor cars (such as Hudson, Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge), engines, building products and, later, electrical appliances. The oldest surviving agency is Dunlop Tyres, which was signed up in 1934, the second oldest Dunlop agency in the world. In 1932, the year oil was discovered in Bahrain, Haji Yousif signed the agency for Nuffield products which included Morris, Wolseley and Riley cars as well as trucks and other automotive products.

  • 1918

Haji Yousif’s son Abdulla was born on 11th November 1918, the day armistice was declared in World War 1. After schooling in Muharraq, he joined his father’s business at an early age and was soon traveling in Europe to secure more agencies. In the thirties, Haji Yousif bought property on Bab Al Bahrain Road in Manama and opened a car dealership showroom, but he had to go there by boat as the causeway linking Muharraq to Manama was not completed until 1942.

  • 1939

At the start of World War 2 in 1939, Abdulla was sent by his father to start the company’s business in Basra, Iraq, and he lived there until 1949. By then his elder brother Mohammed was stationed in Bombay and his youngest brother Ali was based in Dubai, while Ahmad ran the business in Bahrain. The brothers had an active business exporting to and importing from each other throughout the war. Haji Yousif built his own fleet of dhows of 44 vessels carrying his own cargo and ploughing the waters of the Gulf, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean up to India and East Africa.

  • 1952

In 1952, Haji Yousif died and the business passed to his five sons under the name Ahmad Fakhro & Bros which they ran for 6 years. In 1958 the business split into 2 companies. Ahmad and Abdulla joined forces to form the company Ahmad & Abdulla Fakhro and expanded the business to include insurance agencies, Shipping agencies, logistics, fuel stations as well as the old lines of cars and engines. Branches were opened in Dubai, Oman and Kuwait to serve the company’s customers.

  • 1975

In 1975, Ahmad sold his share of the business to Abdulla, who formed his own company, Abdulla Yousif Fakhro & Sons. By the 1980’s, new lines were established in car rental and leasing under the Budget brand, telecommunications under the Ericsson and Avaya brands and Oil & Gas services. In 1994, the first McDonald’s restaurant was opened and that was the group’s entry to the restaurant and hospitality business which later expanded to Kuwait and Saud Arabia.
